Wisconsin Wrestling League Set for K-8 Girls Season

Wisconsin – – K-8 wrestlers in Wisconsin have an option to participate in a new way this season. The Wisconsin Wrestling League was created in an effort to provide access to youth practices and competition throughout the state. In partnership with the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation, the WWL is made up of a number of established USA Wrestling clubs, and kids that wish to compete in the season register through a League Club

The league, which runs from Nov. 30th to Feb. 14, has a separate division for girls and more than 30 league clubs have listed a girls K-8 available option.

Wisconsin has a storied history for girl’s and women’s wrestling. In recent headlines, Macey Kilty won back-to-back titles at UWW Nationals and Alyssa Lampe wrestled at the WRTC Underground. USA Wrestling membership for girls in Wisconsin grew by an incremental average of 15% year-over-year from 2016-19. And, at the end of the 2020 membership season, nearly 650 girls in the state held active memberships. Adding to that growth, the WIAA vote to add a division for girls in a separate state championship passed this summer, and four NCAA member institutions now offer varsity women’s wrestling on their campuses statewide.

Competition for the WWL starts on Dec. 6th at Beast Cage, but the girl’s division begins on Dec. 5th with a single session clinic run by Wisconsin Wrestling Federation coaches Gabby Lord-Klein and Jessika Rottier. The clinic, hosted from 12 – 3 pm, is open to all K-8 girls registered for the season.
