Newsletter Vol. 3: March 2021 — The college post-season, high school events, our own cards and more from March.

Transition Wrestling’s Card at Victory School of Wrestling + Exhibitions at Life University
Transition Wrestling co-hosted an all-women’s wrestling card with Victory School of Wrestling in River Falls, Wisconsin. The matches featured top wrestlers from the surrounding area and across Wisconsin, and then showcased Victory’s full-time athletes Alisha Howk (Sunkist Kids) and Precious Bell (Titan Mercury) on the mat and Koral Sugiyama (TCRTC) as the official.

One of the most profound observations from the card in River Falls was watching wrestlers at all levels lace up their shoes and step under the spotlight alongside several of the best in the country. The girls that spent the leading days in River Falls were able to train alongside the senior level athletes on the mat.

Matchups: Skylar Slade (IA) vs Rachel Anderson (WI); Lyndsey Stark (WI) vs Haley Ward (MO); Haeli Casey (WI) vs Natalie Klavetter (MN); Sophia Bellus (MN) vs Katie Simpson (WI); Vayle Baker (Augsburg/PA) vs Hanna Errthum (WI); Larissa Kaz (WI) vs Kylie Rule (WI); Aireaana Gavere (MN) vs Avery Stedlt (WI); Hailey Berg (WI) vs Kylie Simpson (WI); Emma Gruenhagen (WI) vs Skylar Slade (IA); Alisha Howk (SKWC, WI) vs Aireaana Gavere (MN); Marilyn Garcia (CA) vs Precious Bell (TMWC, WI); Marilyn Garcia (CA) vs Haley Ward (MO).

Howk and Bell started the month in Marietta, Georgia, on the campus of Life University for a mini training camp and exhibition matches with the Life women’s wrestling team. The matches, plus an interview with Life’s Head Coach Ashley Sword, are posted on the T. Wrestling YouTube Page.

Matchups: Alisha Howk vs Julia Vidallon; Alisha Howk vs Peyton Prussin; Precious Bell vs Victoria Francis; Precious Bell vs Jordan Nelson, plus Life U. Exhibitions.

A spot at Olympic Team Trials or a heartbreak tournament—competition at the Last Chance Olympic Trials Qualifier was fierce. High school standouts came out strong and didn’t let up. College All-American’s claimed a number of the top spots and senior level wrestlers earned their places. The recap shares more, plus the final twelve that made it through.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 2-3 in Forth Worth, Texas.

College Wrestling | NAIA & NCAA
The postseason feels an entire two months early. Competition really just started ramping up and it’s already about to hit its peak. NAIA and NCAA programs already went through the first part of the postseason with conference championships and regional qualifiers. This year there were a record number of NAIA conferences sponsoring women’s wrestling—Wayland Baptist won the Sooner Athletic Conference, Campbellsville repeated as the Mid-South Conference champions and Grand View won the first-ever Heart of America Conference Championships. Jamestown had a three-peat championship win performance at the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference over the weekend (the first NAIA program to 3-peat a conference title) and even through the ups and downs of the season, the Cascade Collegiate Conference was the only one to actually pull the plug on their championships this season. Menlo, one of the previously top ranked programs in the country, just got athletes back to campus in January and were not allowed to have their season.

Conference Results: SAC | MSC | HAART | KCAC

On the same weekend as all but the KCAC Championships, brackets for the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) were determined at four regional qualifiers. This is the first time a postseason championship for women’s wrestling has been determined through a qualifier—something we can earmark as a sign of progress in the collegiate infrastructure. Tiffin will host the NCWWC this weekend, March 6th, in Ohio.

Senior Level | Card-Style Events
Card style events continued to showcase high level matches throughout the month. Captains’ Cup aside, the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and Wisconsin RTC hosted their now monthly events in the final week of February.

The WRTC has done a good job with showcasing Wisconsin talent. The first of four women’s matches on Underground 4 was Wisconsin’s Rose Ann Marshall versus Mia Palumbo. It was a match between college commits—Marshall to the startup program at Friends University (Kansas) and Palumbo to Iowa Wesleyan. Palumbo, the No. 2 ranked high school wrestler at 112 pounds, won by technical superiority, 10-0. Kylie Welker (Nazar Trained) continued her streak of dominating Underground performances with a 12-1 win over Marisol Nugent and Julia Salata defeated Michaela Beck by decision, 5-0. Alyssa Lampe outscored Erin Golston 9-0 by the end of their full six-minute rematch. It was a different story from the Captains’ Cup where Golston was able to get dangerously close to closing the point gap late in the second period. Lampe was able to buckle down and maintain position.

The NLWC card had five women’s matches. Jane Valencia defeated Ronna Heaton, Mallory Velte defeated Jen Page and Sage Mortimer defeated Raine Murphy, Ale Bonilla defeated Kendall Bostelman and Grace Stem posted a win over Elleni Johnson. The girls’ team at Wyoming Sem have been on the mat often this month with a dual versus Team PA, as well as at the NLWC, Summit 2 and at the Capitol Cup.

Captains’ Cup
The Captains’ Cup was a massive success. Not only did senior level athletes get critical matches before Last Chance Qualifiers and Olympic Team Trials, but they also competed on the largest streaming platform in wrestling. Team Tamyra Mensah-Stock took home to title over Team Winchester in a tightly contested dual. (Re)visit our section on the Captains’ Cup to review all of the headlines and related content.

Card-style events, college duals, the Captains Cup, Henri Deglane, high school state championships, athlete relocations, rankings: January was an active month for women’s wrestling.

Senior Level | Card-Style Events
Card-style events have provided match time for wrestlers and fan engagement at a new level this season. January started with a senior level women’s match at the Battle on the Banks between World Champion Jacarra Winchester and U23 finalist Koral Sugiyama in New Jersey. Winchester won by technical superiority.

The next weekend, Flowrestling’s Adeline vs Tamyra card featured three women’s matches in Texas. Ronna Heaton (WRTC/SKWC) defeated Desiree Zavala (Wayland) 10-8; Erin Golston (WRTC/NYAC) defeated Emily Shilson (TMWC/TCRTC) 8-5; Tamyra Mensah-Stock defeated Adeline Gray 4-0.

The Wisconsin RTC wrestled six women’s matches on Underground 3. Payton Stroud (McKendree) defeated Sophie Smith (Oklahoma City), 11-0; Kylie Welker (Nazar Trained) defeated Rose Cassioppi, 10-0; Michaela Beck (Sunkist Kids/WRTC) defeated Brenda Reyna (McKendree), 4-2; Ronna Heaton (WRTC/Sunkist Kids) defeated Felicity Taylor (McKendree), 12-1; Erin Golston (WRTC/NYAC) defeated Pauline Granados (McKendree), fall; Mia Palumbo defeated Chloe Ayers, 11-0.

BRONZE: Amy Fearnside (50 kg). Lauren Louive (57 kg) went 2-0 and Vicotria Francis (76 kg) went 0-2.

Senior Level | Relocations
The Beaver Dam RTC (Corvallis, Ore.) announced that Adeline Gray (NYAC) would be joining the RTC to continue preparation for Olympic Team Trials. Alyssa Lampe (SKWC) made the same move in December. The Dam RTC coaches include Chris Pendleton and Nate Engel. The Wisconsin RTC (Madison, Wis.) also added two resident athletes between December and January. First Erin Golston and most recently Michaela Beck. Golston’s announcement came following Underground 2 and Beck’s after Underground 3.

College | Duals
College wrestling got back into full swing in January for the first time this season. Similar to the card-style events, the pandemic pushed women’s wrestling heavily into individual and tri-dual competitions for the first time ever. These results are from Trackwrestling, and may vary from program box scores.
