Page Wins Battle Over Mason at NLWC #3

Jennifer Page and Lauren Mason showcased an excellent six minutes of wrestling at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club’s third live event on Rokfin. Page trains with the NLWC and, in a press release by Wrestle Like A Girl, stated, “They’ve been welcoming and supportive of the women in their room since day one.” Mason, a senior at Simon Fraser, has been training in California with Olympic Silver Medalist Sara McMann. McMann was in Mason’s corner at the event.

The two hadn’t wrestled against each other before this evening, but have been able to compete this fall. Mason, an NCAA ranked wrestler, placed 4th at U23 Nationals. Page hasn’t taken a loss this year and claimed the 62 kg title at Senior Nationals.

Tonight’s bout was highly competitive and really well matched. Mason put up the first points, but Page made the match 2-2, scoring off a counter-attack. Page widened her lead from just criteria by securing four points with her powerful double leg takedown plus exposure. However, Mason brought it back to a manageable two-point match after off-balancing the NLWC wrestler and scoring another takedown. Page led the match 6-4 at the close of the first period. In the second and final period, both wrestlers sought favorable position by clearing ties and picking up the already competitive handfight. Page was able to score on two attacks and exposure points on a counter. The match ended with a defensive scramble by Mason who stopped a final attack. Jennifer Page won the match by decision, 10-4.

Page won three big matches this fall by overcoming a point deficit, and she seems to be really great at scoring when it matters. She overcame a 6-point lead by U23 champion and NAIA No. 1 Desiree Zavala, and scored in the final seconds of a critical match against Macey Kilty to win Senior Nationals at 62 kg last month. Page told Willie Saylor in the post-match interview that once she feels out her opponents and finds her openings she can get the match going.

Commentators noted that the NLWC hopes to make this a monthly event.
