This is one of six team previews for the Captains’ Cup, a women’s freestyle dual competition presented by Titan Mercury WC, USA Wrestling and Flowrestling.

Team: Burkert
Coach: Kristie Davis, nine-time World medalist and U.S. Open champion, four-time University Nationals champion, two-time WCWA Nationals champion
Pool A: Team Burkert will wrestle Team Winchester in the first dual of the day at 2pm CT. At 3pm CT, they will face Team Miracle.

The WCAP had to withdraw from competition this weekend due to a Covid-protocol, leaving Team Burkert without their Captain, Jenna, and 50 kg teammate Whitney Conder. Stepping in are college wrestlers Brenda Reyna (57 kg) and Aleeah Gould (50 kg). Reyna, a senior at McKendree, is a two-time Junior World team member and two-time WCWA All-American. She wrestled a close match with Michaela Beck at the WRTC Underground 3. Aleeah Gould is a senior at King University. She’s a multiple-time college All-American and is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA. Gould placed fourth at U23s last fall.

Katherine Shai (53 kg) brings the most experience to this team. She’s a six-time Senior National Team member and will be able to test her recent success and development against World Champion Jacarra Winchester in the very first dual. Shai won Senior Nationals in the fall with a win over Ronna Heaton (Team Miracle). At 62 kg, Mallory Velte is a World Bronze medalist—she wrestles Macey Kilty in the very first dual, which should expose where these two are at competitively. Between Shai and Velte, Team Burkert has five WCWA titles.

Simon Fraser senior Alyvia Fiske (68 kg) and Colorado Mesa Freshman Tristan Kelly (76 kg) round out the team. Fiske placed 3rd at the National Collegiate Wrestling Championships in 2020 and in 2019 was a U.S. Open champion, Junior World Team Member and Final X runner-up. Kelly is a 2020 Junior Nationals finalist, Cadet Pan-Am gold medalist and placed fourth at Senior Nationals this fall.
