Delaware Valley’s David Duda: “Women’s wrestling is part of our strategic plan moving forward”

DOYLESTOWN, P.A. – – Delaware Valley University announced plans to introduce a women’s wrestling program in September 2018. The announcement indicated that the program would be competition ready for the 2019-20 season.

Most recently, Delaware Valley has tabled plans to move forward with the addition of women’s wrestling during the 2019-20 season.

David Duda was hired as DelVal’s new Director of Athletics in June.

He said they are back at the drawing board after what he’s calling a combination of shortcomings in meeting recruiting goals set by the former AD and missed steps in the planning process. With no mention on what the required number of recruits were necessary to launch the program, Duda said, “In no way does the blame fall entirely on formerly selected head coach Caitlyn Baker.” He said the missed steps in program planning contributed to DelVal’s ability to fully support Baker as she worked to maximize recruiting efforts.

Meanwhile, there are still women wrestlers on campus. While the University is not able to release a list of names, Duda met with the ladies to ensure their access to the mat room and strength and conditioning facilities. According to a list compiled by The Open Mat, at least six athletes were committed to DelVal.

“Given the rich history of men’s wrestling at DelVal, we are excited to move forward with the women’s program. We feel there’s a huge opportunity with the growth in high school numbers across the U.S., here in P.A., and in neighboring states.” Duda said the women’s wrestling program is a strong initiative and that they have clear plans on developing the program.

DelVal will be releasing a formal announcement about the program and a national search for head coach in the near future.

One thing Duda made absolutely clear, “Women’s wrestling is part of our strategic plan moving forward.”

Gannon University is the only institution in Pennsylvania with a returning women’s wrestling program. However, East Stroudsburg University, Lock Haven University and Lackawana College are all expected to roll out their women’s wrestling teams at near full capacity for the 2019-20 season.
